In 1944 the figths reached the city of Budapest, it was a bloodshed, they had to fight for every house. The cemetary seemed like an optimal ground to advance as apart from a few larger crypts there were no difficult obstacles in the way. Therefore the Fiume Road Cemetary became one of the most brutal battlefields in the city.
After WW2 the majority of the graves were renovated by it's owners but still like 1/3 of the cemetary is in post-war condition, because the relatives died, or emigrated from Budapest.
